Redesigning The
Mitchell Map

2023-2025 Credits & Bibliography

This digital edition of a portion of the 1755 Mitchell Map is based on a copy at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture (Map E31 1755:1, sheet 2), with images and permission to publish them generously provided by the VMHC. The edition has benefited from a grant for Vertically Integrated Projects from the Transformative Learning Fund at Virginia Commonwealth University. The edition is the product of a collaboration between two departments at VCU and the Cherokee Language Program at West Carolina University. In the fall of 2023, students in the VCU English Department worked as British Virginia interns to transcribe the map and to provide x and y coordinates for the words’ placement. The English interns were Isabella Devita, Michi Gardner, Sia Komba, and Cael Sinclair; they worked under the direction of Prof. Joshua Eckhardt. In 2024, students in the VCU Graphic Design department designed and geo-referenced the visual components of the map. The Graphic Design students were Jenna Casey, Madeleine Quill, and Stella Tessarollo; they worked under the direction of Prof. Jamie Mahoney. In 2025, two members of the Cherokee Language Program at WCU collaborated to provide translations of relevant words into the Cherokee syllabary: Prof. Sara Snyder Hopkins and Barnes Powell. Special thanks to Prof. Eric Johnson, Head of Creative Technologies and Scholarship at VCU Libraries for his help and guidance.
